David N. Sampsell, 91, Mifflinburg

David Neil “Nut” Sampsell, 91, of 89 Shipton Street, Mifflinburg, entered into rest at 6:30 pm on Friday, November 25, 2016 at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.

He was born on May 2, 1925 in Laurelton, the son of the late Harry and Francis (Schnure) Sampsell.  On April 1, 1950 at the West Milton Parsonage he married the former Ada Mae Snyder, who survives.  Together, they shared 66 years of memories.

He was a 1943 graduate of Hartley Township High School.  David enlisted in the United States Navy, and began his service in 1943, prior to his high school graduation, and served during World War II and was honorably discharged on December 18, 1945 as an Electrician’s Mate 1st Class.

After returning from the war, he began working for Reish Brothers in Lewisburg as an electrician from 1946 until 1964, when he founded his own business, Sampsell’s Electric in Mifflinburg from 1964 through 1986.  In 1973, he began working as an electrical inspector for Middle Atlantic Electrical Inspections until his retirement in 1996.

Nut, as he was known by many, was an avid hunter and fisherman; belonging to the Bear Run Hunting & Fishing Club in Haines Township, Centre County, where he served as a member and past president.  Nut enjoyed the outdoors in general; with having cut and split many cords of wood over his life to keep his family warm and to enjoy friendship with others.  He loved golf and played a mean game of pinnacle.

David was a member of the Mifflinburg American Legion Post # 410; where he was a member for 71 years.  He was a charter member of the Mifflinburg Sons of the American Legion, Post # 410, and also was a 33 year member of the Sons of the Legion, Mifflinburg.  He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War, Post # 1964, Mifflinburg.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Carl D. Sampsell and his companion, Sandra J. Winn of Selinsgrove; and granddaughter, Courtney L. Sampsell of Charleston, SC; two brothers, Myron “Mick” Sampsell of Lewisburg, and Harold “Hap” Sampsell of Naples, FL; and his dog, Nikki.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, Chad R. Sampsell; a brother, Carl “Bup” Sampsell; and two sisters-in-law, Phoebe Sampsell and Marie Sampsell.

A graveside service with full military honors will be announced.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in David’s memory may be sent to American Lung Association, 1200 Hosford Street, Suite 101, Hudson, WI 54016.
