Dr. Kevin E. Shafer passed away peacefully on Monday, August 22, 2016 ending a long
illness. He resided in Mifflinburg for 23 years and was a dedicated family practice physician in
Middleburg and was on the medical staff at Evangelical Hospital.
He was born to Edith (nee Morgan) and Earl Shafer on October 27, 1954 and raised in Belvidere, NJ. He graduated from Muhlenberg College in Allentown with a Bachelor of Science degree. Upon graduation he attended medical school at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, a member of the charter class. He was an intern at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Stratford, NJ followed by a residency at Rocky Mountain
Hospital in Denver, CO. The four years that followed were spent in Julesburg, CO where he
was the only doctor for 40 miles. Returning to the east coast, he practiced medicine in Berwick, PA for six years and then came to this area.
Dr Shafer is survived by beloved wife of 34 years, Kathleen (nee Master). Also surviving:
daughter Kara S. (husband Jeremy) Sauers of Mercersburg, PA; daughter Kylie M. (husband Cody) Fetterolf of Beavertown, PA; step-daughter Patricia K. (husband Scott) Golla of Gibsonia, PA; and step-son Scott Kubovsak of NY; as well as grandchildren: Eli and Hayden
Sauers, Jackson Fetterolf, and Devin, Caitlin, and Lauren Golla. He was preceded in death by
a sister, Nancy Shafer Hausamann of White Township, NJ and a brother, Dennis Shafer, at birth.
Dr Shafer’s great pleasure in life was being in the mountains. In better times he was an avid sportsman, skilled in archery , rifle hunting and catch and release fly fishing.
He also enjoyed and looked forward to annual family vacations to interesting destinations
around the world.
At the request of the deceased there will be no public funeral. Other wishes will be carried
