Ray Wolfe Hassinger

November 18, 1927 — June 15, 2016

Mifflinburg – Ray W. Hassinger, 88, of 274 Raven Lane, Mifflinburg, and formerly of Selinsgrove, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at Geisinger Columbia Montour Hospice at Maria Hall, Danville.

He was born November 18, 1927, in Lewis Township, Union County, a son of the late Clarence Edward and Rachael (Wolfe) Hassinger.  His first wife, the former A. Vivian Mensch, preceded him in death on January 19, 1990, after more than 44 years of marriage.  On April 21, 1991, he married Florence Fisher of Lewistown, Penna., who survives.

Ray was a 1945 graduate of Mifflinburg High School.  In 1947, he started working at the former Huntington Throwing Mill in Mifflinburg.  After more than 44 years of service he retired in 1991, as President and General Manager.  For many years Mr. Hassinger represented the West Ward on the Mifflinburg Borough Council, during which time he also served as Vice President and President for several years.

He was a life member of the Mifflinburg Hose Company #1; a member of Mifflinburg Lodge #370, F. & A. M.;  a member of the Williamsport Consistory;  and, a member of Irem Shrine, Wilkes-Barre.  He was a member of the Sunbury Shrine Club, where he served on the Board of Directors for more than 25 years and served as Treasurer and President in 1987.

Ray was a member of the Sunbury Shrine Motor Corp, where he served as Vice President and Parade Chairman for many years.  He was a former member and past president of Mifflinburg Kiwanis Club, and he served for 20 years on the Union County Selective Service Draft Board.

He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Mifflinburg.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children and their spouses, Karl W. Hassinger and his wife, Catherine, of Rush Township, Northumberland County; Janette H. Georgetti of Wilkes-Barre; and, Susan H. Jows and her husband, Glenn, of Forest Hill; and, a daughter-in-law, Evelyn R. Hassinger, of St. Petersburg, Fla.;  seven grandchildren, Tracey, Tony, Allyssa, Nate, Ben, Becky and Jenny;  nine great-grandchildren, Morgan, Maddie, Tyler, Colin, Abby, Aidan, Emily, Reese, and Daniel;  two step children, Daniel Ernest of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Beverly Lash and her husband, William, of Shamokin Dam; one step granddaughter, and two step great-granddaughters.

Mr. Hassinger is survived by four sisters:  Helen Guffy, of Milton, Barbara Troup, of Lewisburg, Faylene Maurer, of Lewistown, and, Lucille Wenrich, of Colby, Wisconsin, and one brother, Eugene Hassinger, of Mifflinburg.  He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald E. Hassinger, in 2009, a sister, Cloycie Spigelmeyer in 1981, and three brothers, Elwood Hassinger, in 2002, Thomas Hassinger, in 2004, and Nelson Hassinger, in 2007.

At Ray’s request, there will be no viewing.  Interment will be private in East Side Cemetery, Mifflinburg.
