Bertha M. Goss, 89, of 198 E. Market Street, Mifflinburg, went to be with her Lord and Savior, on Friday, December 6, 2013 at 6:40 pm, Riverwoods, with her family by her side.
She was born on June 6, 1924 in Freeburg, the daughter of the late Herbert and Grace (Herrold) Scholl. On January 1, 1946 in Paxinos, Pa, she was united in marriage by the Rev. Fetterolf to Paul C. Goss. Together, they shared nearly 68 years of joyous memories.
Bertha graduated in 1942 from Freeburg Schools.
Bertha and her sister, Mary, began singing as teenagers in church camp meetings throughout Central Pennsylvania. In 1947, she was called to be a choir director for the Intercession City Bible College in Florida. In 1948, she and Paul joined the Central PA Gospel Band, where she served as band director and clarinetist for 44 years. Together, in 1957, she and Paul started attending the Mifflinburg Church of the Nazarene, where she served as choir director for many years, church secretary and Sunday school teacher.
After graduating high school she began working for Halls Motors in Sunbury as a secretary. She worked for several sewing factories during her career; The Shirt Factory, Knitting Mills, Hunts Sewing Factory and Kooltex Factory, before joining retail work. She was a cashier at JJ Newberry in Lewisburg and also at IGA in Mifflinburg. In her spare time, Bertha gave piano lessons from the mid 50's until the early 80's.
Music was her passion, instilling it into each of her family members. Bertha had a devotion room where she would spend time with her Lord, reading her Bible and spending time in prayer. Spending time with her family was very important to her. She enjoyed playing games and putting puzzles together. In her later years, she enjoyed watching birds and wildlife through her windows.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law; John P. and Rachel A. Goss of Middleburg and James L. Goss of Elizabethtown, one grandson and two grand-daughters; Matthew J. Goss and wife, Kimberly, Shannon J Goss-Brown and husband, Christopher Brown, and Shauna K Goss, great-grandchildren; Isabella, Caleb, Eli, Lilah and Adeline, a sister; Mary Rauch, a brother-in-law; Herbert Oberlin, two sisters-in-law; LaRay Scholl and Ernestine Goss, and numerous nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by a brother; Elmer Scholl and a sister; Nancy Scholl; a grand-daughter and a great grandson.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to the viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at the Mifflinburg Church of the Nazarene, 12 E. Market Street, Mifflinburg, where the funeral will be held at 11:00, with Rev. Wayne S. Krell, officiating.
