Daniel Carlisle McDavitt

Daniel Carlisle McDavitt, 78, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, on August 6, 2026. He was accompanied by his wife, his sister, and his lifelong best friend.

Born in Lewisburg on March 17, 1948, Dan grew up with an adventurous spirit, a strong work ethic, and a love of the outdoors. He was a good big brother who led his sister in building snow forts, fighting bad guys, and blazing trails through cornfields and across streams. He learned to read at an early age and became a serious student throughout his school years. During his senior year of high school, he served as president of the National Honor Society. Dan graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1970. He began his career with Bell Atlantic as a lineman and rose through the organization to become a Regional Manager as the company evolved into Verizon. During his tenure, he received the Award of Excellence for starting the first recycling program. Later, together with his wife, he founded his own business, which they successfully built and sold in 2008. After retiring, Dan returned to Lewisburg, where he enjoyed raising bees, tending an extensive garden, and caring for a small orchard.

Dan also embraced life with enthusiasm. He was an accomplished athlete who competed in dozens of road races and triathlons, and he found joy in skiing, canoeing, archery, riding motorcycles, and spending time outdoors.

In one of his final conversations, when asked what tradition he most hoped to pass on to his family, Dan answered simply: “Take the opportunity to help somebody.” He explained that his father and grandfather had lived by that principle, and he wanted his children to carry it forward. Those words were more than advice; they were the way Dan lived.

He believed in serving others. Throughout his life, he volunteered in countless ways, serving on the borough council and later as Mayor of Mt. Pocono, where he was instrumental in securing “the Knob” as open space. He looked for opportunities to help wherever he could: picking up litter because he wanted his community to be a little cleaner, shoveling neighbors’ driveways after snowstorms, playing music for residents in nursing homes, volunteering at soup kitchens and food banks, and officiating innumerable weddings. He even welcomed strangers into his home when they needed a place to stay. These acts were an expression of who he was.

Dan is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Gloria (Ginley) McDavitt, his three children, Heather Curtin and her husband, Chris, Leigh McKathan, and Daniel; his four grandchildren, Rowan, Conrad, Morgan, and Ryland; his sister, Deborah Wehr, and her husband, Mark; his nieces and nephews as well as many extended family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Basil Carlisle McDavitt and Ethel Mae Pardoe McDavitt.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Lewisburg Alliance Church, 137 Supplee Mill Road, Lewisburg, PA 17837. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Dave Muckel officiating. You may make a donation in Dan’s name to the Lewisburg Alliance Church.

He was a good man, a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a friend to many. We will miss him every day.
