Gary Arlan Hackenberg

December 10, 1934 — March 24, 2020

Rev. Dr. Gary Arlan Hackenberg, 85, of Lewisburg entered into rest at 7:18 on Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at Riverwoods.

Born on December 10, 1934 in Lewisburg, a son of the late Wilbur W. and Mary K. (Moyer) Hackenberg. On September 20, 1953, he married the former Betty E. Shaffer, who survives. This past September they celebrated 66 years of marriage.

He served in the U.S. Air Force 1952- 1956 as a B36 Radar Tail Gunner.

He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ.

Gary was a graduate of Mifflinburg High School class of 1952. He was a graduate of Susquehanna University and earned his Doctor of Ministry from the Lancaster Theological Seminary.

Gary and his wife, Betty, have been in partnership for 55 years of ministry beginning on June 9, 1963 at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, New Berlin, where he was ordained into the Christian ministry.

Over the years he served as pastor of Salem United Church of Christ, Columbia, Christ Church, United Church of Christ, Annville, Shiloh United Church of Christ, Danville, and after retirement, interim Pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ, Lewisburg.

Gary served on numerous association and conference committees. Served as president of the Lebanon Association, a member of the conference board of directors. Have served on boards of Devitt House, the Meadows at Maria Joseph manor, Phoebe Ministries, and United Church of Christ Homes. Served as president of the United Church of Christ Homes. Served as a member and officer of various ministeriums and Councils of Churches, and have been a delegate to General Synod.

He was loved by those he served and was known as a caring and compassionate minister to all, especially the less fortunate.

Surviving are in addition to his loving wife, is a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Annette Hackenberg of Florida, two daughters, Mary Beth Hackenberg, and Deb Blandford both of Lewisburg, two grandsons, Tyler and Jason.

Due to the current circumstances a memorial service will be announced at a future date.

Interment will be private in the New Berlin Cemetery.
