James Samuel Barnitz

James Samuel Barnitz, 97, formerly of 95 East Market Street, Mifflinburg, most recently of 3201 River Road, Lewisburg, entered into rest at 6:50 PM, on Saturday, May 19, 2012, at Riverview Manor, Lewisburg.

He was born on November 24, 1914 in Mifflinburg, the son of the late Nevin W. and Gertrude W. (Whitley) Barnitz. In 1944 he married the former Betty Lee Ambler, who passed away in 1986. On February 1, 1991 in Clearwater, Florida he married the former Elizabeth Jane Sterling Chambers who passed away on March 27, 1999.

James was a graduate of Mifflinburg High School, and a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University Class of 1939, with a B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering.

In 1943, James started a career in executive management beginning with Martin-Marietta Corp. then ending in retirement with Honeywell Inc., Tampa, Florida division in 1984.

Mr. Barnitz attended First Presbyterian Church, Mifflinburg, and was a member of Feather Sound Community Church, Clearwater, Florida. Earlier in life he attended the Saint John's United Church of Christ, Mifflinburg.

James was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Lodge #370, Mifflinburg, former member of Shade Mountain Golf Course, and Emeritus member of the Board of Directors of Abilities Inc. of Florida, where he was a former president and director.

Surviving are two daughters and one son-in-law; Beverly K. and Brian Buyers of Port Clinton, OH, Barbara A. Barnitz of Hampstead, NC, one stepson; C. Michael "Mick" Chambers of Mifflinburg, one stepdaughter; Sue A. wife of John D. Griffith of Mifflinburg, two grandsons; Charles Buyers and E.J. Hill, three step-grandchildren; Shelly S. Blough of Montville, Benjamin R. Chambers of Charlotte, NC, Dr. J. Scott Griffith of Mifflinburg, six step-great-grandchild, Alexander C. Blough, Andrew D. Blough, Laney E. Chambers, Reagan E. Griffith, Riley R. Griffith, J. Cannon Griffith, and Jackson D. Griffith.

He was preceded in death by two sisters; Sarah E. "Betty" Yagel, Myra J. Kocher, one brother; Richard Whitley Barnitz, and one brother-in-law; Ernest F. Kocher.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service to celebrate Jim's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church, 507 Green Street, Mifflinburg, with Lay Pastor John Rakow, officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall.

Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Iowa.
