Mary Lou Miller

April 15, 1940 — October 4, 2025

Mary Lou (Ard) Miller, 85 years old, of Mifflinburg, PA, passed away at Geisinger Medical Center on October 4, 2025. She was born on April 15, 1940, the daughter of the late Wilson P. and Marian Louise (Musser) Ard at her parents’ home in Woodward, Haines Township, PA. Her parents moved to Union County when Mary Lou was three years old. Along with her older brother, Ray M. Ard, the family farmed near Mifflinburg. Mary Lou proudly called herself “a Union County farm girl.” She attended a one-room elementary school in Vicksburg, graduated from Mifflinburg Area High School Class of 1958, and went on to attend Susquehanna University studying business.


Mary Lou was married to Johnson F. Miller by Rev. Raymond Fisher on September 12, 1959, at Dreisbach Union Church, Buffalo Twp., Union County.  The newlyweds purchased a farm in West Buffalo Township, where they grew sweet corn and raised poultry. Mary Lou was a prolific baker who gifted dozens of sugar cookies, loaves of bread, and gallons of caramel popcorn every Christmas to neighbors, family, and friends. She grew beautiful tulips and daylilies and enjoyed playing pinochle with her husband and friends. Mrs. Miller was employed by Weis Markets, Inc. for 16 years. After selling the farm and moving into Mifflinburg, Mary Lou watched television cheering on her favorite sports teams.


Surviving are her two sons, COL (R) William P. Miller (Lee Schwartz) of Eagle River, Alaska, Michael D. Miller (Terri Wagner) of Mifflinburg; four grandchildren, Amanda E. Rosco (Justin), LTC Zachary P. Miller (Kirsten), MAJ Thaddeus S. Miller (Lisa), and Lance D. Miller; six great-grandchildren, Nanette, Amelie, Eloise, Jaxson, Emma-Kate, and Eli Miller; nieces and nephews.Preceding her in death were her husband, Johnson (2019), her parents, Marian and Wilson Ard, and her brother, Ray M. Ard and his wife, Nancy B. Ard.


Relatives and friends are invited to attend a combined graveside service for Mary Lou and Johnson Miller at Woodward Cemetery, Haines Township, Friday, October 10, 2025 at 10 a.m. Full military honors will be accorded to Johnson by Thomas H. Claphan Post 410 American Legion, Mifflinburg, and Yoder-Zimmerman Post 1940 Veterans of Foreign War, Mifflinburg. Rev. Raymond M. Wagner, pastor of Montandon Baptist Church, will officiate.


Per Mary Lou’s wishes, please wear casual clothing to the graveside service, which will be held rain or shine.Mary Lou loved flowers.


She requested flowers in lieu of charitable donations.
