Spencer Edmunds Boyer,Sr., 89, of 501 Old Orchard Lane, Mifflinburg entered into rest on Friday, January 02, 2015 at his residence.
He was born on May 18, 1925 in Mifflinburg, a son of the late Frank Peter and Sara Ellen (Edmunds) Boyer. On November 23, 1950, he married Shirley June Showalter, who preceded him in death on April 27, 2012.
Spencer graduated from Mifflinburg High school Class of 1943. He earned his B.S. in Education from Penn State University.
Mr. Boyer served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII.
He was of the Lutheran Faith.
Mr. Boyer began his teaching career in 1950 at the Centennial Schoolhouse, Forest Hill where he taught various subjects. He then began teaching at the Mifflinburg High School and later at the Mifflinburg Middle School teaching science and physical education, retiring in 1984 after 35 years of service.
Spence was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing and coaching high school tennis and soccer. He continued to play tennis well into his 70’s. When he was a young man he played with town teams in baseball and basketball.
He enjoyed reading, gardening, walking, cross country skiing, and hiking. Spence was a proud grandfather and was very influential in his grandchildren’s lives.
Surviving is one daughter; Ann M. Boyer of Kutztown, one son; Spencer E. Boyer, Jr. and his wife Linda of Louisville, KY, four grandchildren; Evan Boyer and spouse Alejandra, Adam Boyer and fiancee Marina Hoe, Hannah Boyer, Michael Boyer, three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Winston Boyer of Mifflinburg, John and Irene Boyer of Camp Hill, Vincent and Anna Jo Boyer of McAlisterville, and one brother-in-law; Glenn and Isabel Showalter of Signal Mountain, TN, and one sister-in-law; Sandra Showalter Khuen-Kryk of Warminster, PA.
Preceding him in death are one brother, David Boyer, and one sister, Jean Benson, two brothers-in-law, William Benson and James Showalter, and two sisters-in-law, Jane Boyer and Susan Showalter.
Family and friends are invited to the viewing from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday and from 10 to 11 AM on Thursday at the Dominick T. Adamo Funeral Home, 247 Chestnut Street, Mifflinburg, where the funeral will be held at 11.
Interment with military honors accorded by veterans from the Mifflinburg American Legion will be in Mifflinburg Cemetery.
