John W. Dunkle

May 17, 1933 — April 7, 2022

Mifflinburg

John W. Dunkle, 88, of Mifflinburg entered into eternal rest at home on April 7, 2022.

Born on May 17, 1933, in Lewisburg, John was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Willis Dunkle. On April 1, 1955, he married the former Mary Elizabeth Kerstetter, who survives. Together they shared 67 wonderful years of unforgettable memories.

John Dunkle graduated from Mifflinburg Area High School in 1952, where he excelled in football and basketball. He was known for being a very fast runner, a trait which he luckily passed on to his lightning-fast sons, Blaine and Blair Dunkle.

After ascending to the position of manager at Beyer & Fortner Oil Company John worked in both sales and delivery. Later in his career, John worked for Bilger Fuels in Middleburg, where he eventually retired. Following retirement, he worked part-time for H.L. Klose & Son's in Mifflinburg, estimating home heating and cooling systems. At the end of the workday, John loved talking with his H.L Klose & Son's co-workers.

John Dunkle contributed a great deal to Mifflinburg; He was a lifetime member of the Mifflinburg Hose Company, was an active member of the Mifflinburg Borough Council, and attended the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mifflinburg. As a Veteran of the Korean War, John took great pride in being a continuous participant in the Mifflinburg Veteran Memorial Day Parade, as well as leading the Mifflinburg Memorial Day Firing Squad for over 50 years.

Golfing was a real passion for John throughout his life and he played almost year-round until the age of 86. As a proud member of Shade Mountain Golf Course, he achieved two hole-in-ones, both of which came after his 80th birthday. When he wasn't playing his daily round of golf or making hole-in-ones, he could often be found watching golf on television.

John was an avid hunter and fisherman at the Feaster's Cabin and the Pardee Camp where he would spend time with his friends during the hunting and fishing seasons. He was also a league bowler at the Mifflinburg Moose, where he beat his brother Roger in bowling for many, many years. John also held a special place in his heart for his three dogs, Daisy, Major, and Eli, and found great joy in playing pool, mowing grass with meticulous precision, spending time with his family at the cabin in Millmont, and playing poker with the Friday night football gang for over 50 years.

John's love of antique cars was well-known; he would often showcase his knowledge and expertise at antique car shows. John was famous for keeping all of his possessions in immaculate condition, especially those with engines, and he could regularly be seen riding his gleaming red scooter around Mifflinburg. John's appreciation for anything with an engine was evident during the many road trips he shared with his wife and best friend, Lib, on their Honda Goldwing motorcycle. They traveled great distances together and have particularly fond memories of their trips to Nashville, Tennessee.

John is survived by his two sons and their spouses: Blaine and Karen Dunkle of Mifflinburg; and Blair and Melissa Dunkle of Selinsgrove. Their five grandchildren are Alexa Davidson (née Dunkle) and Niels Davidson, Palmyra; Spencer Dunkle and his girlfriend Barbra Guirin, Mifflinburg; Brady Dunkle and his wife Rhea Fowler, Essex Junction, VT; Brandon Dunkle, Selinsgrove; and Olivia Dunkle, Selinsgrove. John is also survived by his brother Roger and wife Margie Dunkle, Mifflinburg.

He was preceded in death by his two sons, Vance Dunkle and Bill Dunkle; a brother, Ken Dunkle; and sisters Thelma Aikey and Jean Klinger.

John was extremely grateful for the numerous caregivers that provided him 24-hour care and assistance for the last two and a half years, including his grandsons, Brandon, and Spencer Dunkle.

The Memorial Service will be held at the First Lutheran Church in Mifflinburg, on May 14, 2022. Visitors may call from 10 am - 12 noon, with the funeral services to follow and a gathering in the church basement after the service. The burial will be in the Mifflinburg Cemetery.
